In an ambitious follow-up to the popular Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, a gameplay reveal video has just been released for Middle-earth: Shadow of War. They’re expanding upon the Nemesis System with the inclusion of Nemesis Fortresses. These fortresses will feature unique enemies and defenses that change depending upon who is in charge of the fortress, and that will be largely determined by your actions. You will affect how different relationships play out, creating tales of revenge, friendship, and intrigue. According to the trailer, everything that you do will have a massive impact on how things go, and they claim that no two players will experience the same story. In your world, there may be a territory that is ruled by a particular overlord, causing far-reaching consequences because you decided to spare the life of another character. But for someone else, that entire situation may never exist, replaced by something else based on actions that they’ve taken.
A large part of Shadow of War will be building your army. As you set out to defeat overlords and capture fortresses, so too will you gain territory and increase the size and strength of your army. You’ll even be able to recruit powerful warchiefs and appoint them to run the fortresses that you capture, giving each fortress unique characteristics and defenses. This will continue to create and shape a unique world for each player.
The combat looks enthralling and cinematic, with pieces of well-acted dialogue thrown in amongst gruesome swordplay, fire-breathing dragons, and the complete chaos of siege warfare. One of the things that is most appealing, in my opinion, is the fact that you don’t just have to approach everything by going in guns-blazing. Yes, there may be a massive battle happening all around you, but you have the option of remaining stealthy and executing key targets with surgical precision to sway the battle in your favor.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War is set to be released on August 22, 2017.
